V7ndotcom Elursrebmem Contest Informationv7ndotcom elursrebmem - rantsOK a few hours into the v7ndotcom elursrebmem SEO contest and some things are already starting to annoy me. So I'll do what every good SEO does not and actually deal with them in any productive way - instead I'll just piss and moan some here. Opinionated Newbies15th Jan 2006 - Let's just clarify this. OK, so v7ndotcom elursrebmem started off with a little drama between John Scott of v7n and Greg Boser (Webguerilla). No big deal - it happens all the time. Greg's mates joined him and backed him up, offering up some more prize money (with a few flames aimed at v7n). John's mates did the same. Fair play. I've no issue with whatsoever, nor do I have an issue with any of the drama surrounding the contest. However, it bugs me like hell to see newbies crop up out of the woodwork and starting posting "me too" shit like, "I don't know Greg but he seems like teh devil", etc etc (made up example). Seriously - if you don't know, then shut the fuck up. By all means comment on stuff but don't just kiss ass. That's just pathetic. Anyone so new to SEO that doesn't know at least half the names involved in the contest doesn't have the right to be negative about anyone IMO. *Cry* Google15th Jan 2006 - Next on my hitlist of rants - newbies moaning about the contest in general as if it is some huge deal that's going to bring Google to it's knees or that Google will turn around and bitch slap everyone involved. Two issues: 1. It's a made up phrase. It has very little impact on the commerical viability of Google's index. If anything, Google might watch the progress and take some notes. Had the contest been for the keyword "mortgages", then we might be looking at some bitching slappin'. But it's not. 2. It's a viral marketing campaign. If you are going to say Google will have an issue with this, you may as well say they will penalise you for taking out a newspaper advert. They both just result in exposure. OK this contest results in more direct links, but any other advertising campaign could do the same if conducted properly. The only impact v7ndotcom elursrebmem has on Google is that a lot of sites will start to get some more backlinks, which might skew things a little. But at the end of the day, any one of us could go and do the same link building and content writing work anytime we wanted. The Matt Cutts clause15th Jan 2006 - A pretty decent rule IMO - doesn't warrant flames. Google Base vs Natural Search16th Jan 2006 - There has been a lot of mention of Google Base results showing in natural search results - mainly because people have been spending more time than usual in the SERPs for the v7ndotcom elursrebmem competition these days. Threadwatch posted about it (16th Jan). SEroundtable posted about it (16th Jan). Danny at SEW posted about it (16th Jan). Several people over at V7N.com have been posting about it (15th-16th Jan), mostly assuming they are seeing a different data centre or a "new" SERP with additional features. But this is wrong I'm afraid and despite how many times I repeat myself people seem to have problems understanding. Google is basing new search results on old search data from your cookies. I posted about this back in November at SEW forums (got no response). Clear your cookies and the results dissapear - any seeing results on Google organic for "v7ndotcom elursrebmem" just now should only be seeing Google Base results. And these will be from your own previous Google Base searches. More to comeNo doubt other stuff will piss me off. In the meantime, feel free to discuss v7ndotcom elursrebmem on our forums. >> Back to V7ndotcom Elursrebmem Home
