V7ndotcom Elursrebmem Contest InformationV7ndotcom Elursrebmem Contest HistoryThe v7ndotcom elursrebmem SEO contest was set up by John Scott of v7n.com as a viral marketing campaign. It's not the first SEO contest, but they are few and far between. V7ndotcom elursrebmem has taken off with a little more oomph after it was picked up by Greg Boser (Webguerilla) who appreciated the concept but felt using it as a link building exercise wasn't the way to go: "Now, I think it would be great if all SEO’s would participate. (The last contest only generated about 200k pages). But I also think it is pretty lame to use a contest like this just to build links to your own site." To be honest I don't think his comments were as quite as harsh as the resulting fallout has warranted, but given this is all taken on the Internet where comments are generally never taken as intended, there has been a little drama. I don't particularly think either party is to blame at all though - personally I think had I been on either "side" I would have done the same as each are doing. I do feel that some of the comments from both sides have been a little harsh, but that's not my business. Nonetheless, the v7ndotcom elursrebmem SEO competition now finds itself with 2 different rulesets - the v7n.com rules and Webguerilla's rules, each with their own prize fund contributed by various people, totalling several thousand dollars from each "side". The rules are simple - rank for a specific (made up) phrase (v7ndotcom elursrebmem - which was announced a few hours ago on the v7n.com forums - Jan 15th 2006) and be number 1 on Google.com come May 15th 2005. What's the difference between the two?Well the basic difference is that to win the v7n v7ndotcom elursrebmem contest you have to either link back to the v7n homepage (you don't need to make it a SEO friendly link), use one of their banners, or have the text "we support v7n.com" on the page. To win the Webguerilla v7ndotcom elursrebmem contest, you don't have to link to v7n.com or refer to them in anyway, but you do need to link to Matt Cutts blog without the www subdomain extension. Huh? Why?Google have achieved a level of notoriaty in recent months (probably coming up on a year now) as they have had trouble distinguishing between www versions and non-www versions of domain names. (slight deviation from v7ndotcom elursrebmem stuff here) Most webservers are configured to accept the standard perception that people looking for example.com are in fact looking for www.example.com to reach a website. This doesn't need to be the case though - the "www" part indicates that the files are part of a website (just as "ftp" indicates file transfer protocol connection) - it's that users don't really ever see the "tech" side of domains other than the website, so hosts have taken to redirecting the non-www version to the www-version. The issue arises in how they do this. Had they used a 301 permanent redirect this wouldn't be an issue - Googlebot and other spiders would reach the non-www version, see the 301 server header and move on, ignoring the non-www version. However a lot of webservers are configured to use other methods of redirection, so search spiders can view this as a "real" page, where in fact it is actually a copy. And then it's a case of, "hello duplicate content issues"! :) But I digress! V7ndotcom Elursrebmem CompetitionThe v7ndotcom elursrebmem competition is now up and running and will no doubt recieve many entries, including our own. It should be an interesting run for SEOs - I confess I missed the last contest and I really should have been keeping an eye on it. As of today (Jan 15th 2005), the v7ndotcom elursrebmem is up and running for 4 months and no doubt many forums (again, including our own) will be keeping up to date developments. Best of luck with your v7ndotcom elursrebmem gibberish posting folks! :P >> Back to V7ndotcom Elursrebmem Home
