Business Networking Tips

Business networking can be one of the most effective ways to generate custom for your business.

Not only that, it can help you find services that you need (usually at a reasonable price) and develop a network of contacts for information and advice if needed.

This article will look at ways you can develop a network of contacts and some of the benefits that come with them.

Discussion forums

Does you industry have a discussion forum? Go to it. Register. Participate. Regularly.

Discussion forums are a great way of effectively networking with fellow professionals. They are also a good source of up to date information and help if needed.

You can usually put your site's URL in your profile, for others to see. This can result in a bit of extra traffic.

As you make more posts, you will become known and your area of expertise will also shown. You will find that over time, people contact you (or you decide to contact others) regarding business ideas and deals.

The major bonus of discussion forums is that they are internationally accessible, so you could quite easily come to an arrangement with someone at the other side of the world.

Had he or she been in your local area, then you would have been competitors. But, your local markets are so far apart, that you are now allies!

Aside from the networking opportunities, discussion forums are a great source of information and should help you keep up to date with your industry.

Trade shows and events

Attending trade shows and similar events can help you generate some business and meet people operating in related businesses to yours.

Each industry is different, but in general you will be able to see what your competitors are doing, and what other businesses are targeting the same customers as you are.

A simple introduction and exchange of business cards can lead to extra sales and business partnerships.

Website feedback

This can either be on your own site, or on another site.

By having an obvious and easy to use feedback page, you allow your self the possibility to be contacted through your own site. Now, you will get a large amount of rubbish that has to filtered through, but occasionally, good business proposals come your way.

In the same respect, you can contact people through their own websites and propose a business arrangement.

But remember, they can only base their decision on the quality of your site - so that is what is most important!

Some tips

  • When posting on discussion forums, always read the terms and conditions and find out what is acceptable. There is nothing worse than a newbie poster sticking his or her URL on a post when it isn't allowed!
  • Also, try to keep an eye on the style of posts (ie identify the "unwritten rules").
  • Trade shows and events should be no more than an informal chat with other professionals. But do remember that your first impression counts - try not to be too informal!
  • When contacting other sites, start small. No-one is going to agree to a business partnership with someone they haven't heard of before! Perhaps suggest a content exchange or a reciprocal link exchange. If that works out, then move on to something else.
  • Keep your eyes open. Try not to get conned!
